History
After Fatima bin Mohamed got married, her husband began working overtime to provide for their growing family. But Mrs. Fatima was confused because he didn't bring home more money.
After two dedicated, hardworking years, Mrs. Fatima's husband told her that he had a big surprise. He saved up all the extra money he earned and bought a large house for them to raise their young family in and bought her the gift of a large house.
Fatima told her husband, "I love our house, but I am sad. I cannot have my friends over because they'll laugh at me. We don't have any furniture! Where will we sit?"
Her husband had another gift in store. After spending all their savings on the house, he worked very hard and saved up a small fortune of $1,000. He gave his wife this money and invited her to select all of the furniture and decor she enjoys for the house.
Mrs. Fatima selected fine embroidered silk pillows with tassels, and trasitional glossy, carved sofas for the salon. To liven up the walls, Mrs. Fatima desired special Zellige tile from Fes. Her husband drove for one whole day to the ancient medina of Fes to bring samples home for her to select.
Mrs. Fatima found that the colors were not to her satisfaction. A woman of strong opinions, she decided to take matters into her own hands and design it herself.
For the salon, she designed patterned tiles in her favorite pastel colorways. For the kitchen, she and her husband looked all over Morocco and found hand-painted tiles with an old-world flair and a large antique table of soft golden wood where people could gather. For the linens, which covered the table, napkins for the hands, and a cushion for warm, homemade khobz (flat bread) and cloth in which the family nestled flakey honey-chicken pastilla (her daughter's specialty) Ms. Fatima opted to have locally woven napkins with embroidered stories. The linens, from the eastern Rif Mountains, told stories of Morocco's history and were bordered with designs of local flora.
For the dining room, Mrs. Fatima selected a traditional design in bold, primary hues and textiles in cheerful shades of green, yellow and sunny gold. She wanted the bedroom to be a restful place and told her husband that she would like the bed and wardrobe to be hewn of dark and luminous thuja wood. The furniture in this colour was not made. Mrs. Fatima's husband ventured into the high Atlas Mountains and had it crafted to her specifications by a talented Berber artisan in a small village nestled by the river.
She delighted in hosting friends and family to enjoy her secret couscous recipe.
"Mrs. Fatima's friends asked her to assist them in decorating their own homes," the story goes. Word spread to their family and friends in Europe and the USA. Mrs. Fatima enjoyed the creative process and sharing her culture and traditions.
Thus, the legacy Artisanal Moroccan Treasures was born.
